Grand Rapids Christian High School 21st Century Educational Improvements

The Grand Rapids Christian High School (GRCHS) project is an exciting transformation of an aging school into a first class facility for the 21^st century.  GRCHS grew haphazardly over the decades, leaving little space for community gathering, difficult way finding, student services hidden away in various parts of the building, outdated learning and teaching spaces, and an aging infrastructure.  This complex renovation carved out a two-story hub at the center of the school for students to gather and connect.  All student services, from administration to counseling to a café and bookstore, are located on this hub to create a first-rate student center.

In a facility with additions from every decade since the 1960’s, all work required sophisticated planning and careful consideration of existing conditions.  Work was carefully phased to keep the students and staff in the building, despite a major demolition and construction project at the very heart of the facility.

As traffic patterns have changed in the last half a century, a new “front door” was created, replacing a confusing entry system and creating a welcoming face for the community.  The project also aligns instructional spaces with educational program goals and provides adaptable spaces and a tech-savvy learning environment throughout.  A modest addition provides top-notch science, technology and engineering facilities and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration.
